Overview

What is BPC-157?

BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide that is being investigated for its regenerative effects. It shows high efficacy for rats suffering toxic or surgical trauma, but there is currently little evidence that it provides benefits for people.

Body Protection Compound 157 (BPC-157) is a peptide made up of 15 amino acids. Although researchers who patented BPC-157 claim it derives from a stomach protein, this assertion lacks strong evidence. People believe BPC-157 may help repair damaged tissues, but no human studies currently support this hypothesis.

Our bodies contain over 7,000 peptides, including BPC-157, each performing a unique function. BPC-157 helps the body’s regenerative process by boosting cellular production, aiding in the restoration of tissues. This is particularly beneficial for injuries like muscle or tendon tears. In addition to injury recovery, taking BPC-157 may also provide several other benefits.

What are other names for BPC-157

Note that BPC-157 is also known as:

  • PL 14736
  • PL-10
  • Bepecin

BPC-157 should not be confused with:

  • TB-500

What Are the BPC-157 Benefits?

BPC-157 is most commonly known for helping your body repair itself. It speeds up the healing process by providing essential substances that aid in tissue restoration. In addition to its healing properties, using BPC-157 offers several other benefits, including:

  • Stronger Tissue: In several studies, the regenerated tendon and tissue that is created from BPC-157 could be stronger and healthier than the original tissue. Because of this, the regenerated tissue is less likely to be impacted by oxidation.
  • Safer Healing: When a body enters its healing process, the activity in the immune system becomes heightened. This can have several negative side effects, such as inflammatory bowel disease. BPC-157 research findings have also shown that it can promote a more healthy healing process that could avoid these instances.
  • Reduced Inflammation: Helping to reduce inflammation and overcome disorders that cause it, this peptide also helps to initiate the body’s normal healing response without causing inflammation. This can help to improve joint health and reduce the harmful impacts on the joints that are caused by inflammation.
  • Quicker Healing: Although tests were performed on lab mice, research has concluded that BPC-157 has been effective in speeding up the healing time of soft tissue. When conducted on the mice, the test results proved that BPC-157 regenerative effects occurred more thoroughly and quickly.
  • Improved Brain Function: Mental health has long been a priority in the medical world, which is why professionals are always looking to try new treatments. It’s been found that BPC-157 may have a healthy impact on the nervous system, which gives your body much-needed assistance when it comes to battling stress and anxiety. Because of this improved brain function, some conclusions can be made between a decrease in depression and an increase in hormone production.
  • Potential for Alcohol Treatment: Some studies that used BPC-157 for ethanol antagonism have shown positive results. Alcohol antagonists may be used to deter alcohol consumption for people with alcohol use disorder.
  • Reduced Liver Damage: One additional benefit of BPC-157 is that long-term use has shown signs of helping to reduce liver damage. Many people who regularly take the peptide find that cycles of six weeks on and four weeks off tend to be the most effective.

These benefits are not the only ones that are associated with this peptide. However, they do represent some of the most common.

Scientific Information

BPC 157 is a native gastric pentadeca peptide that is non-toxic and exhibits strong cytoprotective activity. Researchers have used it in trials for ulcerative colitis and multiple sclerosis (Sikiric et al., 2013, 2018, 2020a, b; Seiwerth et al., 2014, 2018; Kang et al., 2018; Gwyer et al., 2019; Park et al., 2020). In human gastric juice, BPC 157 remains stable for over 24 hours (Veljaca et al., 1995), indicating good oral bioavailability (when taken alone) and beneficial effects throughout the gastrointestinal tract (Seiwerth et al., 2014, 2018; Kang et al., 2018; Sikiric et al., 2018, 2020a, b; Gwyer et al., 2019; Park et al., 2020). Additionally, BPC 157 does not require carriers, setting it apart from other standard peptides.

Peptides that depend on the addition of carriers (Seiwerth et al., 2018) or are rapidly destroyed in human gastric juice (Veljaca et al., 1995) face limitations. In contrast, stable BPC 157 likely mediates Robert’s cytoprotection, helping maintain the integrity of the gastrointestinal mucosa (Seiwerth et al., 2014, 2018; Kang et al., 2018; Sikiric et al., 2018, 2020a, b; Gwyer et al., 2019; Park et al., 2020). We believe BPC 157 contributes to Robert’s cytoprotection by counteracting alcohol-induced gastric lesions and by preventing damage from direct contact between the noxious agent and the cell. This mechanism may serve as a key link between the gut and brain axis.

BPC-157 (also known as PL 14736) is an oligopeptide made up of a chain of fifteen amino acids. Its amino acid sequence is Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. This peptide has the molecular formula C62H98N16O22 and the PUBCHEM ID CID 9941957.

The peptide was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency in 2022 under the S0 category of non-exempt substances.

Research Highlights

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibits the experimental peptide BPC-157 under the category of S0 Unapproved Substances. Additionally, no global regulatory authority has approved this substance for human clinical use, and it may cause negative health effects.

There appears to be no legal basis for selling BPC-157 as a drug, food, or dietary supplement, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed there is also no legal basis for compounding pharmacies to use BPC-157 in compounded medications.

However, there is evidence that BPC-157 is being illegally included in some wellness and anti-aging treatments and products.
